Alberta's iconic landscape consists of the Rocky Mountains, boreal forests, and great lakes and rivers. Planting trees will preserve the area's beauty and impact the surrounding environment. Learn more
With your help, we will:
- Protect wildlife habitat and increase biodiversity
- Restore essential watersheds for soil stability and erosion control
- Sequester carbon in the biomass of forests and stabilize the climate
- Planting trees in Alberta is an effective method to restore the land and eventually return the area to a spruce-dominated mixed wood forest. Soil stability is an immediate ecological benefit of reforestation and the area provides enough light for a new forest to grow efficiently. Our Alberta project focuses on restoring riparian function and minimizing future bank slumping and erosion by re-establishing the riparian zone. To achieve these goals, live cuttings will be planted as riparian buffers that will include a combination of native riparian species. 🌲
- As the forest regenerates, it will provide a critically important regional habitat (nesting, denning, foraging, and hunting) for furbearers, sensitive migratory songbirds, sensitive raptors and owls, sensitive amphibians, black bears, and ungulates (thermal and hiding cover for moose, elk, and deer). Our Alberta project will also provide jobs for people in the area, a better quality of air and water, and a recreational outdoor space and trapline territory for the citizens of Wabasca.
- A personalized tree certificate (see gallery) to say thanks for your donation. We'll also send you reports on our Alberta project, so you can track the impact your trees are having on the community and environment.
- We always plant a mix of diverse, native species from local nuseries. This project is working to replenish local forests, so the native species grown in the nurseries include black spruce, white spruce, tamarack, jack pine, red osier dogwood, balsam poplar, and mixed native willow species.

About Alberta
Alberta, a western Canadian province, has a diverse landscape made up of mountains, flatlands, dense forests, and badlands. Some of its most notable landscapes can be seen in Banff National Park, Lake Louise, and Jasper National Park. Some of the wildlife found in the area include elk, mountain goats, black bears, bighorn sheep, and golden eagles.
Alberta is known to be the Canadian province with the most sunshine and has a continental climate, meaning it has a relatively dry climate with warm summers and cold winters. Its climate can be affected by natural factors such as volcanic activity and changes in solar radiation and ocean currents.
Why Plant in Alberta?
Sequester Carbon and Stabilize the Climate
During the process of reforestation, there is a large uptake of carbon from the atmosphere that is fixed in the biomass of the forests and in the soil. This plays a fundamental role in the global carbon cycle and in mitigating climate change.
Soil Stability and Erosion Control
Soil stability will be an immediate ecological benefit of reforestation in Alberta. Riparian buffers play a role in increasing water infiltration and slowing the movement of water. This interception of rainwater will slow the accumulation of water on the ground giving the soil more time to absorb moisture.
Protect Habitat and Increase Biodiversity
Through restoration activities on marginal lands, habitats will be created to maintain biodiversity, ecosystem function, and resiliency. These vital ecosystem services and functions over time will redevelop the complex matrix of native vegetation required to support diverse native species and species at risk.
